Would you believe that a computer and an online math program add up to increased student engagement, improved self-esteem, creative thinking, and team work? Valerria Porter is seeing those results in addition to improved math skills from her third grade class at Bridgedale Elementary School since students started using the First In Math 24 Game online program in November 2007.
The First In Math online games range from addition to Algebra, targeted at grades 3-8, specifically in mathematics facts, mental math, problem solving, concentration, pattern sensing, number sense, and critical thinking. Each game builds upon the skills acquired in previous games.
The program also includes a competition component where students earn points called "stickers". The program tracks individual and team progress online. Students earn stickers for each level completed. In addition, students can reward other students with stickers as praise for a job well done. Porter says, "The competition component provides sustained, positive motivation. The advanced students are never bored and love to work on skill sets in order to advance to other games."
Porter's advice to other teachers is to be an active participant with the students. She explains, "An added benefit I didn't expect is that my students are now spurred on by my sticker count. The top students don't want me to beat them. They check my ranking all the time and challenge me like I do them. We have a lot of fun with the program."
Porter says, "Before First In Math, basic facts were taught utilizing paper and pencil, and flash cards. Now, the students are fully engaged and as they like to say, 'We drive the program'. They create competitive games, where they are required to explain the steps needed to solve the problem, offer rewards, and praise each other."
All of Porter's students are excelling and love First In Math. However, two students in particular are becoming peer leaders. Porter explains, "Charles finds a way to get on First In Math even when he has to share the computer at home with many other people. Zachary has become one of the boldest students in math since introduced to First In Math. He is very cooperative and willing to help others."
Official test scores have not been reported since Porter's class started using First In Math, but Porter remarks, "I know the students' performance in class has improved significantly. Students' performance on 'Response to Intervention' testing probes has increased tremendously and I have never seen kids so willing to challenge themselves."
